How to Manage Your Money
by Martin Divalut
Posted on May 18, 2006

Have you had money problems in the past? Are you just out of school and beginning to actually make some money? If so, you may need help budgeting your money. Take it from me, your budget can affect the rest of your life. Without a budget, you may spend your money frivolously and put your well-being and that of your family at risk.

Perhaps you never had a class that talked about budgeting and your parents weren~t good at it either, so you don~t even know where to start. Well, the best place to start is by making a list. Write down all your required expenses for one month; this should include house payments, electricity, gas money, food, etc. Only write the things you MUST have to live. If it~s something you could feasibly live without, do not write it down. After you list everything, add up the total for one month. This is the amount of money you must make each month to meet your basic needs.

Now, subtract this number from what you actually bring in every month. This total is what you have left over each month after all your necessary expenses are covered. Next, you will determine what you want to use this money for. For starters, you will probably include an amount set aside for savings and retirement, another chunk for fun money and vacation money, another portion may go towards large purchases, maybe some for allowances, etc.

By the way, you should always keep enough of savings to cover three to six months worth of basic expenses; that way if something should happen to cause you to leave work, you will have the money to keep a roof over your family~s head and food on their plates.

If you are still having problems with these steps, you don~t know what to do with your extra income, or just have problems getting your necessary expenses listed, consider speaking to a financial planner. The job of a financial planner is to help you to spend and save your money in a way that meets all of your and your family~s needs. Regardless, when you are done with this exercise you should have a plan of how you will use your money each month. Stick with it, if you don~t, there was no point in undertaking these actions and you may never be able to manage your money.
